Brrrr - It’s Cold in Here! Budget Ways to Stay Warm and Cozy

01-06-2011

Ward off the chills this winter while save money on heating bills by following a few simple and frugal suggestions.

Wear It!

Layer clothing. Think thermal underwear, t-shirts, sweats, topped off with a robe. Remove layers as needed.

Layer socks. Wear Slippers.

Cover your head. Let your hair down.

Wrap a scarf around your neck.

Wrap up with a quilt.

Eat and Drink It!

Sip tea, hot chocolate or broth.

Warm up with a glass of wine, a hot toddy or a favorite liqueur.

Serve soup, stews and chili.

Bake a pie (or anything else). After baking, turn off the oven and leave the door ajar.

Sleep or Lounge with It!

Layer clothing, wear a hat, and wrap your hair around your neck and face.

Layer blankets.

Sleep on an electric mattress pad or with an electric blanket.

Cuddle up with pillows and stuffed animals.

Cuddle up with loved ones and pets.

Make love.

Sleep with a heating pad (electric or microwavable) or hot water bottle. Keep away from bare skin to avoid burns.

Snuggle up in a sleeping bag.

Change to flannel sheets.

Stay clear of drafty doors and windows.

Make it Seem Warm!

Burn candles. (Burn them only in the room you are sitting in and extinguish them before you go to bed.

Turn on a potpourri burner.

Turn on low-wattage nightlight bulbs.

Exchange a regular bulb to a low-wattage red, yellow or orange light bulb. These colors give a room a much warmer feel.

Watch a warm fuzzy movie.

Sit in a smaller room. A small room is easier to heat and gives you that cozy feel.

Light a fire. A fireplace will heat a room temporarily, but remember it will also draw heat up through the flue, causing a chill in the rest of the house.

Move Around!

Do everyday chores.

Do projects - clean closets, paint a room, organize drawers, etc.

Work on indoor hobbies.

Get your adrenalin up by playing board or video games.

Exercise.

Make love.

Take a warm bath.

Fix the House!

Cover Drafts with draft stoppers, t-shirts, rugs or towels.

Weather-strip or cover windows with plastic sheets or clear shower curtains.

Open curtains/blinds to let in the sunshine. Close at night.

Hang heavy or lined curtains.

Insulate outlets with foam insulating plates.

Shut off unused rooms.

Shut registers in unused rooms.

Make sure heating vents are not obstructed. Move furniture if necessary.

Reverse the switch on ceiling fans to push warm air down.

Lay a rug on tiled floors.

Close the fireplace damper while not in use.

Change the furnace filter. The furnace won’t work as hard, decreasing heating costs.

Add insulation in attic and crawl spaces.
